HOW TO: Replace Your Spark Plugs on a 99+ Volvo.

I have another great HOW TO for everyone. This job was a lot easier then I was thinking it was going to be. It will take about an hour to complete.

Tools Needed
  • T-25 3/8 socket or T-25 screw driver
  • T-30 3/8 socket or T-30 screw driver
  • 10mm 3/8 socket
  • 5/8 spark plug socket
  • 6 inch extension for 3/8 socket
  • 3 inch extension for 3/8 socket
  • Flat head and phillips head screw drivers

1)You will need to remove the intake pipe from the turbo to the intercooler. I am doing this job on an S60R so the tube may look different on your car. The intake tube is connected to the engine with two bolts. The one on the front side of the engine is a T-25 screw and the bolt on the back is a 10mm. I recommend using sockets for the T bolts because they can be very tight.

2) You will also need to remove the pipe from the rubber hose which is clapped down with a metal clap. You use a screw driver for this.

3) Lastly, you need to remove the clap that holds the pipe to the turbo. This clap is tightened down with a T-30 bolt.

4) Once the pipe is removed, you can start removing the T-30 bolts that hold the spark plug cover to the engine.

5) Once the cover is removed, you will see the 5 coil packs that cover each spark plug. You will need to remove the coil pack on at a time so that they don't get mixed up. To remove the coil pack, remove the power connector from the coil pack. You may need the flat head screw driver to open the clap. Be easy on it because it is very delicate.

6) Next remove the 10mm bolt that is holding the coil down to the engine and then pull out the coil. Again, be gentle.

7) Now that the coil is out of the way, remove the spark plug. You will need the extension and spark plug socket for this. This is what a good, but worn out, spark plug looks like.

That is all there is to it. The install is reverse of the removal. If you have any questions, please let me know.
