I have a 2001 V70XC AWD. The transmission was rebuilt last year. Currently, the check engine light and service light are both frequently lit. When shifting park to drive and drive to reverse, it hesitates or makes a loud clanking noise at times. I also feel a reoccuring vibration when driving such as through the gas pedal or floor boards, perhaps from the center of the vehicle such as the drive shaft?? Can anyone tell me common problems with the 2001. The mileage is 120,000. I am hoping it is just bad tires or a simple maintenance service is required, of course.

service light is constantly on? doesn't go off after a few minutes?

The transmission itself from what I know is a fault with that car...do you have an OBD-II scanner that you can pull the codes? Otherwise, take it to an auto parts store, ask to borrow those, and report back to us.

Well I know I do not lurk in performance normally cause it's far from my expertise. Probably are others like me too.

I phoned a Volvo repair shop- they say that the problem could be the drive axle shift cupplers and one possible repair is to remove the AWD. I read another posting about a hesitant car shopper who found a car he liked but the AWD missing - does this sound like a good way to save money on a repair? If I were to sell my car later, the same response could happen about a missing AWD. Does anyone have information on the approximate cost of a drive axle?

Most people just remove the AWD system.. It's a common thing to do, just make sure that you are going to a reputable place for the work.

All you need to do is remove the prop-shaft and it is now FWD.
