air bag error message

Postby carolb » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:24 pm

2003 volvo cross country xc70. with 112000 miles...have the airbag error message on.....have been told it can be any where from 30.00 to 2000.00 to repair. i have had major maintenance done on this car in the last 3 months. i wonder if something weird has happened during repairs as the light came on shortly after last repair. i want to get it fixed and trade or sell this car. any ideas or suggestions would be helpful as i am a newbie on this site.

could very well be if someone borked up the wiring a bit, then yes the light would come on.

how long after the major maintenence did it come on? you could try communicating with the shop that did the work and say okay, look...wtf.

Have the abs system scanned. If the battery was unplugged, it might have set a fault on the system. That can be reset. Otherwise the code that comes up will let u know what the fault is.

thanks everyone. i did take it to a private shop. my mechanic actually owns a volvo as well as repairs them. they tried to reset the light several times. they also found some issues with the back seat belts. alas they have too informed me that the sensor has gone bad and it will have to be replaced....at the dealership because it involves the odometer. BIG SIGH AND 1500.00 later I will be trading this car as soon as i possibly can. i have spent so much on maintenance in the last 4 months....

glad i found this site though....

I would just drive the car until you have to get it inspected and then trade it in. Spending 1500 dollars to fix the SRS system is just nuts. if you ask me.

My husband absolutely agrees and that is why we are trying to trade it ...NO car dealer will touch it with out getting it fixed or taking a trade in value of about 3500.00 now that is nuts!!!!! We will lose 1500.00 no matter which way we work it. sigh.......

then if thats the case either drive it OR fix it and drive it.... It's a smaller loss than trading in the car and making payments on something new. Financially it makes sence.

You could always be bad and take the bulb out so the SRS light goes out, then try and trade it in. You have nothing to lose really.

i could not in good faith take the light out and leave it ......i feel bad enough driving it myself knowing the airbags could not deploy if one of my kids or i are driving it. i am confused though why people are giving me so little as a trade in for it. i thought it would be worth more...i have been told it is because it is the airbag situation or that 2003 was a bad year for this car.....that's a bunch of bull......volvo has always made a good product...so i thought. oh well. thank for the responses

The AirBag situation is more then reason then anything else. If you think about it, when a car is in a minor accident, the car is totaled 9 times out of 10 just because the airbags went off. The cost to fix and replace the airbags is very high.
